from the ford at pease bay is a woodland walk up pease dean...
the path was a bit muddy in places and although early spring the woods were full of birdsong...
there is something lovely about scots pine trees against a blue sky...
there is a loop along an adjoining burn but at is far end the bridge is gone...aswell as most of steps up the hill so had to clamber up the steep slope after fording the burn on a fallen tree...
some of the wooden steps climbing up were a bit slippy so you really have to stop to have a look around...the water was quieter now higher up the gorge...
popping out on the bridge of the road to coldingham further down the coast...
high above the gorge the view up and down the gorge is above tree hieght...
along above the gorge runs the southern upland way through penmanshiel wood which i wanted to go to take pics of the old cottage at the far end about another 2 km...the path isnt that scenic through mostly larch and spruce trees on a flat grassy path...
the cottage isnt very visable in summer although close to the path..here we are a stones throw from the east coast railway and the A1 so it isnt exactly peacefull...
the cottage is again boarded up...it had been vandelised as all these places are close to roads...
some old junk lying about...an old german MZ motorbike wheel (yeah bike geek!)
a pair of handlebars!...
old wash tub...
another old motorbike wheel 18"...british?
old man cave...
its a nice old cottage...wonder who lived there?...maybe a woodsman or a shepherd before the wood was planted...
behind the cottage is a small burn running through a tunnel under the old forest road and down an old stone culvert...seems alot of stonework for such a small burn to
run into the water...it is then piped through a big concrete pipe for a bit when near the railway...
i found an old milk bottle in the died back undergrowth...east lothian co-operative!
returning to walk back it was nice to get a headwind again as warm in the sun where sheltered..and good to see the sea again...can see how far walked from cove...
at the bridge is the other descent down pease dean which the southern upland way follows to the coast...
back to pease bay...
and cove...
ened up walking 14 km taking nearly 4 hours....
heres some film...click on the thumbnail to watch...
I remember that bridge at pease bay bit less smoke than the last time I was there
ReplyDeletehaha... yeah amazing its still standing!!,busier road nowadays there...
ReplyDeleteBro, I usd to collect the EU Bathing Water Directive samples in summer at Coldingham and Pease Bay when I worked in the Tweed River Purification Board in the 1980's. I have to say, the area doesn't look like it has changed that much in 20 years! Nice post - looks like you had a great (bikeless) day out in the sun!
ReplyDeletebro; berwickshire is great for a wee day out...lots of nice places there too and yes they havent changed much...
