Genesis Caribou Prototype; grows gears and off to new home

After only recently acquiring and build up the Prototype Caribou Fatbike frame set of UK Genesis bikes it`s off to a new home!, but no far away-my big brother was a bit gutted missing out on the nice new Pugsley i recently sold so this is going to him has put a big smile on his face :)

Why sell it?
Why sell it?, well i like living a minimalist lifestyle house wise and want to do the same with my bikes. I have also cleared a half dozen or so boxes of old spares tot he skips and it feels good to have less of things i don`t need. The old Surly Pugsley  and new Surly Wednesday are all i need with + wheels for both bikes, while the Dawes Ultra Galaxy and Pashley Speed 5 take care of tarmac and gravel (Old Railway line paths) duties...

Getting geared up...
Having built the bike as a single speed  i stuck some gears on it with a new 1x10 Group set comprising of a Race Face narrow wide 30t chainring, a Sunrace 40t cassette, and Shimano Zee mech and shifter...

Clear bash guard too!...

Easy Sunday Morning...
I thought i better get one last ride in on the bike and make a film with it and check the gears were bedded in ok, so up early and down to Tyninghame for 7am and had the coast to myself, perfect for some filming along some of the Secret Trail...

Into the woods and a lovely fresh air and smell after recent much needed rain, also the woods were alive with morning chorus bird song...

Secret trail...

Return on the rocks...

Film done and happy with the bike i took it home to clean it and prep it for handing it over to big bro today, he will enjoy this...

How to set up `Ghetto Split Tube` Tubeless - a short film...

A post for fellow bike nerds...

I have been riding Surly`s 29+ Rabbit Hole rim wheels for 4 years now on various Surly Pugsley builds and briefly on a Surly Karate Monkey 29er ,  Surly Krampus 29+, and Surly ECR 29+.
For 3 years now i have used them set up tubeless using the tried and tested method of using a split tube on the non tubeless specific rims.

Why use this method when you can buy tubeless specific rims and tyres by other companies?,
Well good point  unless your happy with your Rabbit Hole rims or other non tubeless specific  Fatbike rims you have but want an easy solution to getting no more pinch flats, better tyre sealant protection against Hawthorns (common around country roads here) and a more comfortable ride that a tubeless tyre gives,

This blog is not about what is better or the best way to do things, but a method i have found is fairly simple and lasts the length of the tyre life -barring no major rips in a tyre of course (fingers crossed ok there so far!).

It is a post on a method that can be done with out any big air hit contraptions or compressor,
But easily by your workshop floor pump or bike pump you carry when riding will do fine, so in other words it`s a set up that can be re inflated out in the field-so to speak...

There is also the ability to deflate and swap out a busted spoke or spoke nipple, something that can be common on an older wheel used on the coast with salt water exposure that rots spoke nipples.
Yes you could cut a hole in a proper tubeless tape and then patch it with Duct tape afterwards, but folk will often tell you who have done this of the tape glue breaking down over time and leaking sealant and air,

All methods of home made tubeless work or fail long term depending on the manufacturer of rim and tyre as well as how one goes about it. I have found the method i use to be reliable on all rims i have owned except Halo Tundra Fatbike rims where the tyre is just far to slack to try,

You can read a lengthy blog post i wrote on what has become known as `Ghetto Tubeless`  Here...

So a wee film just under 8 minutes, hope you can understand my SE Scottish accent if viewing from afar!  :)

29+ Commuting again...

After a week off from cycling after Forth Fat 17 and the following weeks cycling it was ace to get back on the Surly KramPug 29+ commuting again today...

And news is the drought is over (maybe) after heavy rain on Saturday and again on Monday.
It has transformed the countryside with a lush green growth you cannot help notice as you cycle country roads...

A day spent at work mowing as the sky cleared to a clear deep blue midday...

By 3pm the sky changed real quick as the forecasted rain swept in behind me as i rode home from work...

An approaching heavy shower had me turning off road and sheltered behind the wall of a WW2 roofless building on Station road south of Dirleton village...

No sign of it passing quickly i got the Alpkit waterproofs out the courier bag....

I gave it 5 mins before the rain lightened a bit and i continued...

Onwards into the tail end of the down pour and near Kingston i headed around Fenton Tower...

Baaa!

Onwards and south of NB Law into Balgone Estate and the sky once again cleared, time to get the waterproofs off!...

Some woodland trails before following the John Muir Way home...

All quiet and peaceful in `The Shire...`

Dark Side Of The Lens, A film on Vimeo....

Posted this on here a while back and still an amazing film...
A lovely bit of cinematography, and none of the often arty narrative, but simple true words of someone with passion for for what they do,
Esp the ending words `a story to tell the nephews`...

Sunday Single speeding...

Last day of a great weeks holiday at home after the previous weekend`s FORTH FAT  Fatbike Gathering,

It`s been a week of riding dry trails and classic springtime east coast weather of a cool onshore breeze with warmer inland temperatures and cool enough evenings to warrant having the stove on...

Single speed European Championships - Inverness; May 26th - 28th
Friends Mike and Ben had both entered this event and i did not take much talking into also entering for a non competitive weekend of banter and booze,

Single speed bike needed for the weekend;
I already have a bike ideal for this event, the Genesis Prototype Caribou which i built up as a single speed, err except it`s going off to live with my big brother soon once a 1x10 drive chain arrives, so i would make up a single speed option for the do it all option Surly Pugsley

Single speeding a Pugsley;
With a spare fat wheel set  with 9 speed rear hub from the newer Pug which i recently sold as a 29+ `KramPug` these wheels would be ideal.
The On One Single speed conversion kit was added to the rear wheel and with the hub being a 9mm quick release (QR) i added the reducer washer to the Surly Tugnut  which was already on the Alfine rear hub and `bobs your uncle`,
Remove the Alfine shifter and cable (cut 5 cable ties) and add the BMX chain from the Genesis  SS kit as shorter for the 18t sprocket (Alfine chain is longer as a 23t hub sprocket)  and the the bike was single speeded in under a half hour, gearing 32t x 18t,

Never used a Pugsley before as a single speed with 4" Fat wheels, just with 29+ wheels so always fun to ride the bike with another set up.

This old sticker makes sense now... `NO BRITNEYS`  Spears rhymes with gears...  get it?  :D

A quick ride around the street revealed the wider BMX chain rubbed the bash ring so i removed that and the bike was ready to go...

Ben got in touch as had a pass for Sunday so got the train down from Edinburgh to NB with his Surly Ice Cream Truck (ICT)  which he is riding SS with a 32t x 20t gear, on 5" tyres it kind of worked out the same as my 32t x 18t gear...

Incoming train!...

Ben was not alone off the train as also was Gerry and is brother Rorie who came to FORTH FAT,
Both rode the Saturday ride, but only Gerry made the Sunday ride, and they were back to ride the route.  Being single speed we said we would meet them at Tyninghame hopefully and Ben and i rode inland from NB and around the local estates...

I made 3 short films today with the Go Pro, here is the first, along the Lake side trail in the nearby estate,

Heading towards the coast we rode over Becky`s Strip Byway towards Whitekirk...

Down to Lochhouses and  Ravensheugh where we timed it perfect and spied the boys on the coast at Peffersands..,

We met up and rode around Willowhead Point and on to the Secret Trail...

From the coast we rode back inland on the return leg of Sundays FF route on the John Muir Way,  rippled corrugation`s from recent trail improvements made for a tough ride but in a couple of weeks this will all be surfaced with wind dust and be sweet to ride...

One last trail as we reached NB Law car park and a loop around the old Reservoir, this is known locally as `The whisky Bottle`  from it`s shape,  check out the space invaders :)

Here is a film riding round,
