Bikepacking again in Berwickshire Day 2/ Pt 2

 

Dawn over the Merse, and we were up sharp and tent down and away we cooked breakfast before hitting the road/or rather trail with straight onto a lovely old road running down from the castle towards the Merse - the flat fertile area of Berwickshire farmland north of the river Tweed...

Several green roads and gravel tracks later we joined a main road and soon turning off onto a minor road we were at our destination for todays wee explore...

The former RAF Charterhall Airfield...

A monument to those killed here in flying training exercises during WW2...

Today like many now disused WW2 airfields there is a bit industrial work going on using some remaining hangers and buildings...

The perimeter (Peri) track is still complete and being a later fighter station the runways were concrete and still survive...

Last use of these was car racing with the likes of Jim Clark having raced here...

Quiet today with just Skylarks and Peewits singing as they flew overhead...

We got another couple of old roads in on our cycle back to the van parked at Duns...

And enjoyed an ice cream in the warm weather...

An ace couple of days cycling just a few miles down the road...
