Road Trip; Kintyre...

Day 1
went for a 5 day visit to Kintyre on the west coast, last minute invite from my sister, ian, and kids who have a holiday house for 2 weeks...
Kintyre is a penulsia in Argyll and Bute district on the west coast, down the map a bit from Oban...
while less visited than further north but it has alot of scottish history to see...
not to mention some stunning coastal scenery...no more than around 10 miles wide west to east it enjoys views out to sea of the inner Hebridean islands of Jura,Islay and Ailsa Craig and Gigha to the west and to the east Bute and Arran....
as always the journey is as important as the destination in Scotland for myself, after the hour of boredom of the motorway to Stirling it was west to Loch Lomand...
lots to see along the way...

through Balloch and the road up the west side of the loch...
the "bonnie banks" themselves...

heavy rain showers swept down the Glen along Loch Long...

then up and over the "rest and be thankfull"...

down the other side is a famous old bridge...

then around Loch Fyne to Inveraray...
the smell of peat burning was in the air as i passed roadside cottages, a great smell!...

through Lochgilphead and west to Achahoish on single track roads to turn up a no through road for several miles to the holiday house on the shores of another sea loch, Loch Caolisport...

although only around 180 miles it took nearly 4 hours to get here, an indicator of average speeds on the roads here...fast enough when theres great scenery to soak up...only 1pm so out for a walk with the kids and some exploring...
a lovely waterfall...

roots always find a way through rock...

further along the coastline towards the roads end...

and St Columba`s cave...

can proberly count on one hand the cars that drive up this road in a day...
roadside wall...

lots of food and and cider that evening then bed for a 10am start tomorrow over in Tarbet for a 2 day cycling micro adventure...

  1. We spent everal faily holidays at Tayinloan, facing out to Gigha and Jura beyond. It's such a loved bit of country that I have a big oil painting showing the view out to the paps of Jura above the fireplace in the lounge.

Looking forward to the next installments........
