It was for myself in 1987... and it is the last weekend of May now every year as summer kicks in i always refer to as Freedom Weekend...
A weekend to do what i have enjoyed since i left school, err that's mostly bicycles, some booze, someone special to share life with, and chainsaws are always nice :)...
This ``Road Only`` cycling stuff that is all the rage;
Actually i did some road riding over the weekend on the Genesis Cdf, just A-B stuff to visit my mum and visit some friends etc, head down on the drops and going for it...and have to say i was bored in just 30 miles!. God it is boring!, not to mention a numb arse...
Touring, Roughstuff, or some Gravel grinding.. yeah thats fun!...
To do some touring be it a day ride or multiple days and stopping to see stuff and take pics, stop for food, beer etc, i enjoy on drop bar bikes.
I also love riding country roads and exploring old roads and rougher routes on my drop bar bikes,
But all this head down going like hell and seeing nothing is not for me. Just seeing the road ahead and not what is over the hedgerows is not my scene at all.
Fair do to those that can do it and grind out 100 mile days, or compete and train.
What i like...
But na not for me. No pics etc if your head down beasting it all the time, Now i know why road cyclists do not do blogs!, they would be boring as hell as the only thing to write about is their own riding stats, which mean nothing to anyone except themselves...
Touring with some rough stuff thrown in is far more fun and interesting, and i will be sticking to that from now on...
Meanwhile...
So here are some pics from the lovely warm evenings, now that summer has arrived, we have been to a couple of BBQs and had fun evenings as you do on old bikes, i will leave the Strava crap for the carbon roadie freaks... only kidding :)
Old but still the same...
And although getting an old git i still love this weekend, and say what the hell and enjoy life...
I have a low income but a rich life, money ain`t everything, i would like to earn more-my career is kinda on the back burner again, but i make the most of what i have, you have one life so live it...
Summer hols...
On 2 weeks summer holidays now and loads to pack in, always enjoy going for a dawn cycle on the first Monday morning instead of cycling to work :)
5am ride down to the coast on the Pugsley, some pics with the phone...
Gators are a good idea...
Jimmy was the car park attendant at Yellowcraig for years, and a good friend of our Family. My late father spent many days working with Jimmy...
Miss my Dad, talking to him about what i have seen along the coast, always something to talk about...
Bike showered at the car park...
Home on the trails and only 9.30am!...
Going Internet free for a while so back in a few weeks...
I've been enjoying reading about your tours and wholeheartedly appreciate (and practice) the slow down and enjoy your surroundings approach to cycling. I'll keep checking back for your return to posting. Enjoy your "time off".
ReplyDeleteHere! Here! My sentiments exactly regarding road riding/training. Not something I'd enjoy, but for those that do, have at it....
ReplyDeleteHave a great Holiday!
