Brooks Cambium Saddle

I have quite a few bicycles, and a few have classic British made Brooks leather saddles, made right here in the UK in England since 1866, one of the few remaining British products.
I own an old 1950`s B66, 2 1960`s Professionals, and 4 B17s that will probably all out live myself...

Saddles for life for a daily cyclist, and something still made from a classic engineering past of out country that the everyday man can still afford. Some things work so why change them?...

 Pt 1

Pt 2

All of these leather saddles are great for cycling-except in extreme wet weather conditions, and as i found also for coastal cycling with salt water saturation being leather, until now...
I just received one of these from Wiggle after seeing one on friend Mikes Pugsley at Forth Fat last weekend-a waterproof  Brooks saddle!, not made in the UK this new model but still hand made with fine detail...

Made in Italy this saddle maybe a move with the times for Brooks...

Just the job for my Purple Pugsley...

Loads of stuff available by Brooks along with saddles...

More soon...

1930`s Raleigh Popular...British Steel...

Got my BT Broadband fault repaired yest by local engineer and friend Richard,
Old wiring was replaced and it is super fast now!
More importantly Richard is like myself a bike fettler and bike blether and he ended up selling me this;
A 1930`s 28" wheel, 24" frame Raleigh Popular!...

A quality made bit of old British steel. Some real quality nice detail to this bicycle. It will make a lovely summer evening pub bike to ride to East Linton for a few ciders...

I already have a mint 1953 Raleigh Roadster sold from a shop up the road in Edinburgh and havd blogged it.Click here to look at that bike; British Steel Blog post

Built when Great Britain produced the finest steel in the world. An Island nation famous for its Victorian revolution which saw canals, ships, buildings, railways, arms, and one of the best inventions of all time; The Bicycle...

Oh it feels the same weight as the Surly Pugsley!...

Saddle needs some TLC with some Brooks wax...

Frame looks to have been repainted as sticker graphics that are available for restoration, original these were hand painted, with a feather, by a craftsman...

Look at that quality in the springs...

Need some shoes for the rod brakes...

And a part for the enclosed chain guard...

One of the longest produced Raleigh Models, the Popular was made from 1930 to the 1950s...

Raleigh Popular Advertising...

Nice detail...

I should find some white wall tyres for the bike...

Made in Britain...Brooks Saddles...

Its a name that is iconic world wide in hand made leather saddles for bicycles,  and they are still made in the same way today in England since production started in Birmingham in 1866.
Check out the spring machines... -:)

Brook saddles may not be the preferred choice of all cyclists but they have had a loyal following for many years, owners have ridden the same saddles for over 50 years, and many old saddles still survive today on vintage bicycles.

I have 6 Brooks saddles, none are on my regular used 4 off road bikes this now, though one was used for 3 years on my Pugsley Fat Bike,
Four i still use, two B17s, the benchmark Brooks saddle, a 3 year old on my Dawes Galaxy which i ride daily to work...

And another nearly 10 year old on an old 1980s Muddy fox Courier MTB...

But it is the two older saddles i still use that are really nice, a 1954 B66 on a 54 Raleigh Sports...

And a 1962 Brooks Professional Saddle which i recently fitted to the retro Klunker build...

The company was owned by parent company Sturmey Archer, both were once subsidiaries of Raleigh,
In the year 2000 Sturmey Archer collapsed and was bought by Selle Royal who have continued the traditional production at the Brooks factory in England to this day.
There is something really nice about owning something that has been hand made, every part of these saddles is hand formed, some using machines but put together by hand, here is the rivets installed...

In recent years there has been a huge interest again in Brooks saddles and there other products, people want hand made quality and are happy to pay for it.
You have one life, and one ass,   you may as well treat it to some hand made comfort...

Have a look through the Brooks Website...
