Spring has sprung...

We are into March and this winter not a single snowflake fell here on the coast, despite some dusting's on Edinburgh's Pentland hills and our own Lammermuir hills a few times.
It only rained on 4 days throughout February and never have i known a winter to be so windy.
It has been mild too in February.
Saturday was a half days beach ride with friend Jason. I rode the pugsley to the coast and back, off road on trails through the former RAF Drem at Fenton Barns. This sign at Fenton Barns was never moved after the former Staff buildings - now the retail village was bypassed. It is kind of still correct except that there is now two parallel B 1343 roads!...

Former Mess room...

We had a nice wee beach ride out from Gullane point and along to Yellowcraig, riding a few new lines through rocks and other paths through the grassy dunes at Freshwater Haven keeps it interesting.
It was also once very calm with little wind and just the noise of the waves coming in...

-:) not written by us, we had just pigged out on some Sports Mixtures!...

What was nice was to see one of the local pilots come in to land his Bi plane in Archiefield -:) ...

Sunday dawned as for casted with rain, heavy rain. I sorted out some wet weather gear for a mud fest ride through the local woods. North Face paclite, Endura waterproofs, Viking rubber dry boots, and even the calf lenght Army Gore Tex socks incase i went into some of the deep forwarder forestry vehicles tracks ...

I also fitted the Bar Mitts as it had turned really cold with the damp air. The thumbies work fine with them...

I planned to make a swamp riding film and used the fork mounts to carry the mono pod i attach my camera to...

Off i go for the woods just as the rain goes off and the overcast low cloud lifts, typical after getting all dolled up for it. I look up to the now clear view of the Lammermuir hills and there white with snow!. Quick U turn and back home, bike on car and 12 miles drive later i am cycling on snow, the first of this winter for myself...

This is Dunlaw Wind farm, and the concrete object is from the cold war. It is the Oxton Royal Observer Corp Monitoring Post, click Here for a film of inside another one.
The Snow was wet and thawing and actually rubbish and i would have as well have been on a regular bike!. It was a damp, bleak day up there and and i only rode about for an hour. As you can see on the film it was a bit overcast!...

Next weekend is the lowest tides of the year, so will be making the most of it, a chance that cannot be missed to ride places only exposed by the tide a few times each year...

  1. Shocked by the snow... although chilly at the coast I would never had thought it was cold enough for that. Wish I had a day off the morn! :)

  2. It had nearly all thawed by sunset Gavin.
Hope we do not need to wait another 30 odd years for a proper winter!
