Isolation Cycle 48; Dunglass Bridges, and WW2 defences....

Another dry day - this drought seems endless!, but not complaining for cycling, were out daily and staying local and staying safe, another great wee loop from Dunbar is the cycle rout east to Cockburns Path then return along the coast on the John Muir Way,
Today we rode to the Bridges across Dunglass Dean which the present A1 and East Coast Railway cross,
Back in 1940 when The Battle of Britain was raging over the skies of southern England and the Scottish East Coast was getting bomber attacks from Occupied Norway the Home Guard here was also preparing it`s own defences for what was expected that summer an inevitable invasion of theses shores, along with the `Coastal Crust` coastal defences rapidly being constructed, plans were afoot to slow invading German forces anywhere possible, This included  bpreparing bridges and tunnels for Demolation and evidence can still be see of this in the old road bridge that still stands today , now out of use you can still walk or cycle across and having a look under it`s eastern end you will be suprised what you find...

Sand bags and remains of them 80 years old sit where they were built to hold enough explosive charge to blow up one end of the bridge and disable it...

Must have been some amound to blow up this concrete constructed 1930`s Bridge,
It would have been some bang...

Nearby Army buildings still stand from where the Army were based this area being of such strategic importance...

Heading back home and a funny sign!...

And an empty beach with closed Caravan Park....

Wee film around the Bridges, Song is `Into Dust` by Boards of Canada
