Genesis Prototype Fatbike; update

Bikes should be ridden and not hidden..

In loft storage last two years set up with single speed 27.5+ wheels....

The Genesis Prototype Fatbike;
A one off prototype in Reynolds steel, with sliding adustable dropouts and finished in Genesis team colours. 17” medium it is a little smaller than my 18” medium Surly Pugsley’s but rides real nice.
Yeah it could be hung up and looked at but it’s just a pushbike at the end of the day and should be owned by someone who will love it and ride it.
So the bike is back out in use again with two sets of wheels - Fat and Plus and 1 x 10 gears as my other bikes all have,
Girlfriend G bought the bike and i soon had set it up ready for her to use,

The Halo Fat wheels were bought used online and i soon had them set up Ghetto tubeless after they were delivered and adding discs and new Cassette for a quick swap with the 27.5+ wheels...

With a spare new 10 speed drive chain i soon had the bike ready and G added a womans saddle...
G has rode over 300 miles already in just over a month swapping the wheels herself for the coast or inland on trailsand she loves the bike!

I`m happy to see this special one off frame set being used, esp by someone who having just discovered Fatbikes is absolutely loving the bike with the two wheel options,

The only bike i now own and do not ride is my original Surly Pugsley but thinking it will get some use again over the summer...

Genesis Caribou Prototype; grows gears and off to new home

After only recently acquiring and build up the Prototype Caribou Fatbike frame set of UK Genesis bikes it`s off to a new home!, but no far away-my big brother was a bit gutted missing out on the nice new Pugsley i recently sold so this is going to him has put a big smile on his face :)

Why sell it?
Why sell it?, well i like living a minimalist lifestyle house wise and want to do the same with my bikes. I have also cleared a half dozen or so boxes of old spares tot he skips and it feels good to have less of things i don`t need. The old Surly Pugsley  and new Surly Wednesday are all i need with + wheels for both bikes, while the Dawes Ultra Galaxy and Pashley Speed 5 take care of tarmac and gravel (Old Railway line paths) duties...

Getting geared up...
Having built the bike as a single speed  i stuck some gears on it with a new 1x10 Group set comprising of a Race Face narrow wide 30t chainring, a Sunrace 40t cassette, and Shimano Zee mech and shifter...

Clear bash guard too!...

Easy Sunday Morning...
I thought i better get one last ride in on the bike and make a film with it and check the gears were bedded in ok, so up early and down to Tyninghame for 7am and had the coast to myself, perfect for some filming along some of the Secret Trail...

Into the woods and a lovely fresh air and smell after recent much needed rain, also the woods were alive with morning chorus bird song...

Film done and happy with the bike i took it home to clean it and prep it for handing it over to big bro today, he will enjoy this...

The Prototype Genesis Fatbike...

 Fatbike geeks feast your eyes on a bit of UK Fatbike history that i got the chance to purchase and is too good a thing to pass owning, this is the Genesis Prototype Fatbike frame, a pre production Caribou Fatbike it was a one off Reynolds 525 Tube frame set finished in Genesis Team colours paint and also has sliding drop outs...

Here is a pic when Genesis built it...

Building the frame set...
Symmetrical frame set with sizing for a 170mm rear hub and 135mm front hub, so i raked through the spares in the man cave to see what i had to build this bike up.
With a supplied headset i had a stem and bars, front hub, Halo Tundra rims and some as new tyres, Some cheap Shimano square taper cranks would do, and while i have a spare 1x3 Pugsley drive chain that includes shifters cables and front and rear mechs i wanted to make this build different to my Pugsleys so with a Surly stainless 32t chainring and a little used single speed BMX half link chain from a previous 29er Singlespeed build i decided to build this as a single speed,
A Square taper VP 100mm Bottom Bracket was ordered from France, an On One single speed spacer kit, and a used Halo 135mm rear hub were all ordered via eBay and once they arrived i started off with building the wheels...

Spokes were used items with new spoke nipples, one pair were 262mm which were ideal on the rear hub build, while the 264mm spokes were a wee bit long on the front wheel build but the odd protruding spoke was ground down with the Dremmel once built and true...

Rear done...

Rear 170mm hub was a tad too wide for my older wheel jig but still managed to true it ok...

And front after a bit Dremmel work on the spokes...

Out to the Man Cave and new parts i received that morning in the post,  Charge saddle, Race Face Ride seat post, Ergon grips, Surly Orange rim tape, and the On One Single speed spacer kit...

Surly Gumwall Nate tyres mounted with the orange rim tape...

Stem and bars next, with free Avid BB5 brake set, and some spare disc rotors from the spares pile...

And ready waiting for a Square taper Bottom Bracket...

All that above was 2 weeks ago, and Tuesday this arrived through the post from France, a sweet VP 100mm BB that is real smooth and was under £30 posted from France!, why does no one in the UK sell these?...

Fitted with Copper greased threads and greased ends ready for crank arms...

Tightened up, and a spirit level as a straight edge placed on the chainwheel to check chain line to the rear sprocket and pure fluke it was in line!...

Half link chain on and ideal chain tension,  gearing is 32t x 18t...

Some Alpkit Love Mud  Guards fitted and a wash after de greasing the chain which once wiped dry was lubed with Squirt Dry Lube, and job done....
