Revisit to Gin Head - WW2 Top Secret Radar Research Station

 

I stopped at the Cafe on the cliffs overlooking Canty Bay the other Sunday and to a walk along above the cliffs to have another look at the Buildings of Gin Head...

This is of coarse where top secret radar jamming techniques using captured German radar were used along with another invention called Windows where foil strips dropped from aircraft led German Radar to believe a huge force of ships was heading to Port de Calais and that the force heading for Normandy was a decoy, this fooling deployment is responsable for saving countless lives of soldiers as the Tank regiments were kept at Calais...

Perched on the cliffs this place would make the ultimate man cave with all the out buildings that could be used to keep all your toys, there is even a crane to move your non running military stuff!...

Pease Bay and the worlds tallest Bridge!... in 1786!

 

Pease Bay and Dean, above the well known bay favoured by surfers, has a bridge quite famous, as it was the tallest bridge in the world at 130ft when constructed in 1786, and its still used today to get traffic across the deep ravine,  after a wee look parked up on the Royal Enfield Classic 350 I spun ip the road to revisit another old ruin across a lovely old packhorse bridge...

Revisit to Cove...

The magical Cove harbour on the Berwickshire coast is always a lovely place to visit, on a stormy day when the North Sea is angry and you can hardly stay stood up in the howling onshore easterly winds, or a morning like today when I visited early just after 7am, it was easter Friday and I was out filming several other places for motorbike films  and arriving early paid off as I had the place to myself...

Royal Enfield Classic 350; Garvald to Whiteadder road...

Monday and quieter country roads, so i took the Royal Enfield Classic 350 a run up into the local Lammermuir Hills leaving the Hillfoots road i dropped down into the sleep small village of Garvald to ride the Road across to the Whiteadder. 

Up past Nunraw and the Monastery - where apparently if you go in you will be invited in for a cuppa and chat, so if your up here and need a recharge you may get some cake too!...

A fun narrow singletrack road  a bit rough in places with lots of gear changes to keep things interesting the Enfiled was really in its element up here, esp now with the engine pulling a lot better at lower revs with the New air filter...

Up onto the Grouse moor now and pulled in at Whitecastle Hillfort, dating from the Iron Age, it is the first point of visit in a guide book I have that was published in the 1970`s...

Like the Geology walking trail at Barnes Ness east of Dunbar which like this both have been forgotten about and signs nearly all disappeared now. A shame as there is a lot of fascinating history in East Lothian...

On we go and came across a Grouse shoot...

Looks like those Renult ex NATO trucks are the vehicle of choice these days for transporting the Shoot beaters - we saw another up at Spey Dam when we went bike packing...

This wee road is ace fun putting along taking it easy mostly in 3rd or 4th gear but there is a couple of 2nd gear bends like here at Johnscleuch Farm...

Past the Cleuch of the WW2 crash site of the Fairy Firefly that crashed here killing the crew

G correct me watching my film that it is only a War Grave if any crew s bodies are not recovered - though it still goes without saying nothing should be lifted and taken from these crash sites which sadly goes on and year on year items disappear from the areas...

Soon were at the Whiteadder Water and join the more common used road...

One last thing to point out, the old road through the Glen before it was flooded in the 1960s flooding Millknowe Farm where G`s Grandmother lived, and Kingside school...
