Heavy Snow in the USA
BBC News website and some blogs i read are showing reports of heavy snow fall in the North east USA. and pictures of distruption for the people living there...
Back home;
Here in the UK we have had the warmest and driest Autumn with a frost free October, then maybe the wettest week in November for a long time and now here away from the sandy loam soil of the coast the clay based heavy soil of the woods and fields are now saturated as the last few blog posts have shown...
Will we get snow?;
There was a hand full of Fatbike owners 4 years ago here in the UK when we experienced the coldest winter on record in 2010/2011. and fewer still the previous year when we also got a lot of snow.
While a lot of ploughed roads around the countryside were ridable on regular mountain bikes, esp with ice Spike tyres fitted, owning a Fatbike really opened up where you could go and easliy maintain forward motion through deep snow. I blogged many days riding to work in sub zero temperatures.
You can read back through these days of amazing skies and freak weather starting here with a snow ride in January 2013; Snow ride blog posts
There are a lot of Fatbike owners now here in the UK with there fingers crossed for a bit of snow to go cycle in...will never forget commuting in on days like this...
That was minus 10C, then a few days later it dropped to -22C!
It was Baltic!,
Water bottles froze on the bike, and not ice mush- they froze totally solid!.
I spent the weekend riding in our local Lammermuir Hills. I will always remember the face of the snow plough driver i met at the top of Crystal Rigg hill when he saw my Pugsley Fatbike and i said i had ridden up there on snow ploughed roads from East Fortune!
It was -22C outside temperature on his Lorry's thermometer!, :)
And the local Garleton Hills....
And riding regular country roads that were ploughed hard snow pack from no road salt left-car free except farmers tractors and the odd 4x4... this day was amazing!
Keeping the fingers crossed...

Becky`s Strip Byway... A year on since resurfacing proposals...
It`s over a year already since i wrote this letter about the proposed surfacing of Becky`s Strip Byway to the East Lothian Courier; Majority of local Cyclists are against proposed surfacing of Becky`s Strip Byway...
It`s a year on now since this Proposed Surfacing kicked off..After local word of mouth and online awareness on Facebook and other local forums a Public Meeting was called and i think it was the response of the local people to leave the route as it was due to the lack of local regional council maintenance previously that the Resurface plans were abandoned...
Becky`s Strip Byway;
Is an ancient Byway, and all that remains in un metalled condition a Historic Pilgrims route from Lindesfarne to North Berwick...
You can read previous blog posts on the Byway here by clicking on the label; Becky`s Strip Byway
Lets look at what has happened since the resurfacing proposal was cancelled...
Just where is this Quoted 2 Million a year revenue from cyclists using the North Sea Cycle Route? lol
We saw from work overlooking the Byway 1 or 2 cyclists a day in the summer, and next to none by Autumn.
And as predicted East Lothian Council has never been near the route to maintain it.
It was mowed 3 times (By myself) and apart from a local resident who walks it daily with his Collies and litter picks it there is no `ongoing maintenance` at all of the route, which is by the way easily ride able on a normal bicycle this week in November after 2 weeks heavy rain ;)
If you think it would have been better being surfaced then that is your choice and we all have the right to our own opinion. I think the costs involved for the proposed surfacing could have been put to better use on a maintenance plan for the existing John Muir Way Path, or on Cycle lanes around the nearby towns and villages of Dunbar, East Linton, WhiteKirk to North Berwick Coast road, and around North Berwick town...
In the meantime keep enjoying this historic old road in it`s unmaintained natural condition...
Film from a month ago...

Mid Week Cycle; Fatbike Commute detour...
5 weeks until the shortest day, still just enough time to ride down to the coast after work before sunset and enjoy the amazing light on the coast and sea, then ride the Secret trail and through the woods home as the light fades to the west and Geese fly overhead inland from the coast...

Quick spin around the woods...
Quick 2 hour fix around some of the local woods before sunset on the Surly Karate Monkey 29er. After a weeks rain the ground is pretty sodden and muddy away from the coast. New tyres were the bizz, keeping me upright and forward traction and cleaning as Minions do...
2.5" front, 2.3" rear Maxxis DHF Minions, great winter tyres for the KM...
Great Autumn sun too...
Home for a cider and light the Chiminea...
