Into May... another `Retro Fatbike`; Mk1 Salsa Mukluk

1st May today, and April ended with classic east coast early spring weeks weather; high pressure blue skies with isolated heavy showers and a cool easterly onshore wind that seen temps drop to near zero,
infact this morning dawned with a frost...

Last day of April was a stunner with blue skies as i went a peddle after work to Yellowcraig, the ground is dry with no rain for over a week here and slowly spring is starting to wake up in the woods...

Retro Fatbike?
With Fatbikes out for over 12 years now i guess we can now have Retro Fatbikes right?
Today i took out the Salsa Mukluk i built up over a few months,
I have two alloy Fatbike frames, this Salsa Mukluk and a Charge Cooker which both take offset rear wheels-the same as my Pugsley`s which i have a few spare wheels for.
This frame is the original Mk1 from Salsa and came with the rear adaptor allowing a regular 135mm MTB hub to be used, i like Fatbikes i can swap parts about on as i build and often rebuild bikes...

You may have already noticed this bike in a film i made last month back with M cycling on it, here is the film i made...

Beachride at JMP; 8th April 2018 from coastkid71 on Vimeo.

The bike suits M`s height better than myself, more on the frame sizing in a bit...
Down through the woods on dusty trails and clear vision with the leaves not all out yet...

Hike a bike up onto The Craig and fine views along the coast...

A wee look at the Mk 1 Mukluk (Eskimo shoe)....

Under frame cable routing and the supplied alloy spacer that reduces the chain stay from 170 symmetrical to 17mm offset with 135mm hub option, the spacer comes with a 170mm quick release spindle...

Steel Salsa Enabler fork with stainless drop outs are a nice touch, and a bling and rare in the UK Phil Wood `Chub` 135mm Fatbike hub, laced onto a symmetrical Surly Large Marge rim...

Other retro Fatbike stuff includes a Phil Wood square taper 100mm Bottom bracket and Middleburn RS7 cranks, Surly Larry 120 tpi tyres - set up Split tube tubeless...

The bike has a stock `Snowblind` white Pugsley rear wheel (the first complete build Pug) and so a Shimano LX hub which i would like in time swap out for an early Hope or better matching Phil Wood 135mm rear hub...

Views east to the Law and the Bass Rock...

On down into the woods and out onto the links, a play on the rocks then onto the John Muir Way...

Turned off for a play on this soil heap recently bull dozed up, be rude not to!...

The dozer...

Future blog on what was once under this soon...

The Salsa Mukluk use`s 17" sizing as a medium, same as the Singular Puffin Fatbike i have rode along with a few others,  only an inch shorter than the 18" Surly Pugsley and Moonlander bikes but enough to make em ride able but not a lot of room to stretch out on if 5ft 11" like me, though it does make them a bit more lively to ride out the saddle.
This bike is getting the 70mm stem swapped out for a 50mm and narrower bars fitted to make it more like a roomy small size bike, ideal for M to use,

Here is a wee film made this evening,
Song is `I Don`t Mind` by The Psychedelic Furs

    Hi CK
Really good write up again. Your blog is one of my Fat bike fixes (even more since the sad demise of forum! - what happened there?)

You have such a cool collection of Fat bikes but which is your favourite?

    Keep up the great work.
