Mid week night ride - Gullane Point

We have had rain for about a week now, it`s all folk are talking about - the weather,
While our Lammermuir Hills have snow everywhere is else is soaking with flooding in fields etc...

Well not everywhere is soaking and probably miserable to cycle offroad, not to mention so soft that  damage would be caused to trails by a regular MTB...
If you own a fatbike then there is no worries as if your looking for somewhere to cycle there is the coast -;)

Did a couple of hours down at Gullane after work, probably the driest part of coastline is around Gullane being all sand and rocks. Taking pictures is not very easy at night with a £70 camera, one day a cheap compact camera will be available capable in auto mode to take a picture that shows  what the human eye sees when riding enveloped in darkness with just a spread of bright light in front.
I love solo night riding and have not done much lately, i love no one around on the coast after dark and enjoy the quality `Me Time`  esp after a day at work...

Soon as i will be doing more local trails again mid week and more night riding with the selling of my Fargo Frame set and a return to an old Surly 29er favourite which i have to admit to kinda regretted selling,
i picked up another one this afternoon via Law Cycles, Not new but not ridden either,

More on that soon...

Some pics from tonight...
Great to see the original Starters box restored and on the 1st tee of the kids course in Gullane...

From around the same era the old roadside milage stone near Gala Hill...

Out across the Reseve...

Can you see them?...

Roe Deer...

Sea Buckthorn being cleared by a 360, not allowed to use a metal detector out here but after the upheavel of this being done i don`t see why not...

This is where my dad found the WW2 NAZI Spoon

Lammermuirs are white, don`t know if its rideable, probably very wet snow,
Been hearing of real problems with Lambing this year due to the very wet and bitter cold last couple of weeks and many Ewes are dying, the East Lothian side of the Lammermuirs has many Sheep farms...

Down the `Tank Block trail`...

Nearly dark... lights on...

The Magic Shine 872 lights are still going great, amazing value for money and amazing light!,
I can`t be bothered with some peoples (racist) comments on Chinese Lights , these are great lights and all i have heard is of good UK back up on any warranty issues.
There is a lot of snobbery with bike brands but i am not interested in that, same goes with Superstar Pedals that i use, there ace!

Guess how many shells...

Loads of sand has been moved with recent big swells, i was rolling down here last time we were here and now all the sand has gone that nearly covered that big wooden Pier Buffer thats been here for years...

Not had my dinner yet so time to return up to the village...

And a bag of chips... happy days...

  1. Well done getting out for a mid week ride. The weather is not looking good for the weekend. My Chinese light is great. (The instructions were something else though).

  2. This maybe a dumb question, but when your riding near the tank blocks, do you ever have to worry about mines or other ordinances. I know that you mentioned in other posts that there was a lot of training there, but I just wondered if you where ever worried about getting blown up LOL!!!

I always love the history posts that you do.

    As always, thanks!!!

  3. Sometimes the odd live Mortor or unexploded Artillery round turns up exposed in the dunes after wild weather but in the whole the coast is pretty safe,
A lot of the coastline was indeed mined in 1940, German POWs were paid to clear it in some places after the war!
The shipping lanes out at sea here were mined either side too, so the odd one of them gets pulled up by fishing boats, bet that gets their heart rate beating!

    cheers
