The other evening in the man cave i was swapping the bearings in the Pugsley rear wheel - a Hope pro 2 and I did something stupid, i have 6 Pro 2 rear hubs and have changed the bearings on numerous occasions.
I do not have the proper Hope tools and use punches and sockets to do the job, well the other night i payed the price for not using the proper tools and cracked the shell of the hub, doh!...
As we would say here in Scotland; `What an eejit` (Arse in England/Wales)
Maybe this 5 year old hub which has seen 4 years of beach riding and salt water exposure just has served its lifespan and fatigue has made it brittle...
End of the day its done, so i ordered a replacement shell and today had a go at re lacing the wheel, my second wheel build having laced a coaster hub onto the Klunker Progect .
Under Dave's watch full eye at Law Cycles i got a crash course on spoke patterns and he started the spokes then left me to get on with it...
After 5 years abuse and exposure to salt water here on the coast the only corrosion to this rim is a bit around the valve hole, only because it was filed larger to take a Scraeder valve leaving an un coated edge.
These rims are tough as old boots...
Following Dave's instructions i soon had the wheel laced up..
I trued it on the pug frame when i got home and its sweet...
A parcel arrived today from friends Jane and Andy from Yorkshire. It was a pair of Dogwood Designs Podgies, made in Alaska, a present for a MSR Multi fuel stove and a fleece i gave them for their recent trip to the USA to compete in the Arrowhead 135
I am made up for their kind gift, I still plan to visit Iceland one day, a dream holiday i have wanted to do for years, and these will be just the thing to keep my paws warm, thanks guys, your the best friends!...
Bummer to hear of the hubs demise, but congrats on the wheel build.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post,
